Who needs an ITIN?
An ITIN is a 9-digit number (format: 9XX-XX-XXXX) issued by the IRS for people who need to comply with US tax law but are not eligible for a Social Security Number.
- Non-resident founders receiving US-sourced income (dividends, partnerships, royalties)
- Non-resident owners of US LLCs or C-corps filing a US return
- International entrepreneurs who need to get paid via US payment rails
- Spouses or dependents of US citizens or resident aliens
- Non-residents claiming tax treaty benefits on Form 8833
- Resident aliens (Green Card holders) ineligible for an SSN
What an ITIN does NOT do
An ITIN is a tax-processing number only. It does not change your immigration status or work authorization.
- Cannot be used for employment authorization
- Does not qualify you for Social Security benefits
- Cannot be used to claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)
- Does not replace an SSN for non-tax purposes
- Does not grant any immigration rights or status
ITIN number format
9XX-XX-XXXX
Always begins with 9. For numbers issued after 2012 the middle (4th–5th) digits fall within set ranges (such as 50–65, 70–88, 90–92, or 94–99), so the 4th digit may be 5, 7, 8, or 9 — not only 7 or 8.

Add-ons
ITIN questions, answered
Common questions from non-resident founders and international entrepreneurs. Ask our team if you don't see yours.
How long does it take to get an ITIN?
The IRS asks applicants to allow about 7 weeks to be notified of their ITIN application status, rising to 9–11 weeks if you apply during peak processing (January 15–April 30) or are filing from overseas. If you need faster handling, notify us during intake and we will prioritize document prep.
What documents do I need?
You need IRS Form W-7, a federal tax return (or qualifying exception documentation), and proof of foreign status plus identity — most commonly a valid passport. Our CAA can authenticate your passport in a video session, so you never mail the original to the IRS.
Can I apply without filing a tax return?
In most cases a federal return must accompany Form W-7. However, IRS Exception 1 covers US-source third-party withholding (dividends, royalties, partnership income), Exception 2 covers treaty benefits, and other exceptions exist for dependents or spouses. We determine the right path during your eligibility intake.
Do ITINs expire?
Yes. An ITIN that has not been used on a federal tax return in any of the last three consecutive years will expire. ITINs issued before 2013 and those with middle digits 70–88, 90–92, or 94–99 have already expired and require renewal before they can be used again. Our renewal reminders prevent surprise expirations.
Can I use my ITIN to work in the US?
No. An ITIN is a tax-processing number only. It does not authorize employment, cannot be used for Social Security benefits, and does not qualify you for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). It also has no effect on your immigration status.
What is a Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA)?
A CAA is an individual or entity authorized by the IRS to review and authenticate identity documents on behalf of ITIN applicants. When a CAA authenticates your documents, you are not required to mail original documents to the IRS — a significant security and convenience benefit for international applicants. Our Kicker plan includes a full CAA session.
I already have an ITIN but it expired. Can you renew it?
Yes. Renewal uses the same Form W-7 process, submitted without a tax return (for pure renewal), and the same CAA document authentication. Select our renewal service and we handle it end to end.
Do I need an ITIN if I already have an EIN for my US LLC?
An EIN (obtained via IRS Form SS-4) identifies your business entity. An ITIN identifies you personally as an individual. If your US LLC is a single-member LLC treated as a disregarded entity, the IRS requires you to file Form 1040-NR under your personal taxpayer number — which must be an ITIN if you don't have an SSN. So yes: even with an EIN, you typically still need an ITIN to file the required personal return.
Can I open a US business bank account with an ITIN?
Many US banks accept an ITIN alongside your EIN and LLC formation documents to open a business checking account. Acceptance policies vary — some institutions (Mercury, Relay, and select community banks) are more ITIN-friendly than traditional big-four banks. We can advise on bank selection as part of our broader formation and compliance guidance.
