Situations where a professional agent is essential
Being your own registered agent works in a narrow set of circumstances. Here is who most benefits from professional coverage.
Non-US founders
You cannot be your own registered agent if you don't have a US address. We give you a compliant physical address in any state — required from day one.
Remote and traveling founders
State authorities require someone physically present during business hours. If you're often unavailable or remote, professional coverage prevents missed documents.
Privacy-conscious owners
Using your home address makes it part of the public state record. Switch to a professional agent to keep your personal address completely private.
Multi-state businesses
Foreign-qualified in multiple states? Each state requires its own registered agent. We handle all of them under one account.
Businesses at litigation risk
If you're in a lawsuit-prone industry, professional handling of service of process ensures you never miss a critical filing deadline due to an undelivered notice.
Companies changing addresses
Moving offices or operating from a co-working space? Don't disrupt your state filings — your registered agent address stays stable regardless of where you work.
Why founders switch to Kicker
Being your own registered agent is legal in some circumstances, but it leaves gaps most founders only discover when it's too late.

Registered agent questions, answered
Everything you need to know before you switch. Still have questions?
What is a registered agent?
A registered agent is a person or company designated to receive official legal documents — service of process (lawsuits, subpoenas, court orders), tax notices, and state correspondence — on behalf of your LLC or corporation. Every US business entity is required by law to maintain a registered agent with a physical address in each state where it is formed or registered to do business.
Can I be my own registered agent?
You can, but only if you have a physical street address (not a PO Box) in the state and you are personally available during business hours every weekday. If you work from home, travel frequently, or operate outside the US, a professional registered agent is essential. Using your home address also makes it part of the public state record, which most founders prefer to avoid.
What happens if I miss a service of process?
Missing a legal document can have severe consequences. Courts can issue a default judgment against your business if you fail to respond to a lawsuit in time — even if you never received the papers. A professional agent ensures all documents are received, scanned, and forwarded to you immediately so you always have time to respond.
Do I need a registered agent in every state?
You need a registered agent in your state of formation and in every additional state where you are foreign-qualified (registered to do business). Simply operating in a state or having customers there does not automatically require foreign qualification — consult with us to determine which states apply to your situation.
How quickly is mail scanned and sent to me?
All mail is scanned the same business day it arrives and uploaded to your dashboard. An email notification with the scan attached goes out within minutes of processing.
How do I switch registered agents to Kicker?
We make switching straightforward. After you sign up, we prepare the appropriate state form to change your registered agent, file it with the state, and provide you confirmation. The process typically takes 1–5 business days depending on the state. Your current agent is notified automatically through the state filing.
What address appears on public state records?
Our registered office address in the relevant state appears on all public records — your home address does not. This means anyone searching the state database, including litigants or data brokers, will see our address, not yours.
Is registered agent service required for a foreign LLC?
Yes. If you formed your LLC in Wyoming but now want to do business in California or Texas, you must file a foreign qualification in each additional state and designate a registered agent there. We handle this for all 50 states under a single account.
Does Kicker help with the FinCEN BOI report?
We can help you understand the Beneficial Ownership Information (BOI) filing requirement under the Corporate Transparency Act. Under FinCEN's March 2025 interim final rule, US domestic LLCs and corporations and their US beneficial owners are exempt from filing a BOI report. Only entities formed outside the US that have registered to do business in a US state ('foreign reporting companies') must file. While the BOI report is separate from registered agent service, our platform provides reminders and guidance on the filing. The report is filed directly with FinCEN — there is no state-level intermediary.
Can I cancel anytime, and what happens to my documents?
You can cancel your registered agent service before your next annual renewal. Upon cancellation, all scanned documents remain accessible in your dashboard for 90 days. We will also notify you before the cancellation takes effect so you have time to designate a new registered agent with the state — skipping this step can put your entity out of good standing.
